Reviews

James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2008. Overall Rating 4 Stars.

“Perth medical specialist Dr John Rosenthal heads Rosenthal Wines which is a small part of the 180 ha. Springfield Park cattle stud situated between Bridgetown and Manjimup. He acquired the property from Gerald and Marjorie Richings, who in 1997 had planted a small vineyard as a minor diversification. The Rosenthals extended the vineyard to junder 5 ha, equally divided between shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. The wines, especially the Sparkling Shiraz, have had significant show success.

The Cabernets 2004 Rating 94
A very nice wine; rich, supple and smooth blackcurrant fruit supported by round, soft tannins; good oak; great finish and aftertaste.

Richings Shiraz 2004 Rating 90
Bright and clear colour; a vibrant fresh, medium bodied palate with predominantly red cherry and plum fruit; engaging and unforced.

Shiraz Cabernet 2002 Rating 89
Maturing attractively; spicy/earthy overtones to the still substantial foundations of red and black fruit; good tannins and oak.

Sparkling Shiraz 2003 Rating 89
Plenty of flavour; good balance to the spice and black cherry fruit; a longer time on lees would have produced an even better wine.

Rosenthal Wines 2003 Richings Shiraz

"Lifted aromas of berries and cedar spice. The cedar carries on to the palate where it suppresses the elegant redcurrant and complex spice characters. The long finish reveals a spirity, alcohol nuance that does not detract from the overall enjoyment. An additional two to three years bottle age should see this wine blossom."

Rosenthal Wines 2003 Sparkling Shiraz

“Complex, brooding aromas of primary black cherry, plums and savoury barrel ferment character. Sweetness is in context with the succulent, ripe varietal flavours and balanced alcohol. Some doubt is expressed regarding complexity, but all panellists agree that the ripping flavours, structure and persistent finish suggest it’s a well made sparkling style that is mandatory drinking as soon as the sun rises above the Darling Scarp.”

Awarded “Pick of the Region”
